Terms of service

DraftLast edited 6 October 2026
Draft. Needs lawyer review before launch. This text describes how the product is designed to work. It is not legal advice and is not yet binding. Jurisdiction, data-protection roles (GDPR, UK GDPR, India DPDP), retention periods, and the live-game logging described below all need a qualified lawyer's sign-off.

1. Who these terms are for

These terms apply when you use Chessglance: the website, web app, browser extension, mobile app, and the API. By using them you agree to these terms. [Lawyer: contracting entity, governing law, venue.]

2. What the service does

Chessglance reads chess positions from images, such as screenshots, book diagrams, PDF pages and video frames. Results can be wrong. Check them before relying on them, especially in publishing or teaching.

3. No use in live games

You may not use Chessglance, or anything produced with it, to help you or anyone else in a game in progress against another person: live, rated, correspondence or tournament, on any site or in person. This includes using the position, engine analysis or suggested moves that you obtained through the service. It also applies to anything you build on the API.

4. Fair-play logging and disclosure

Recognition works on any page, but we flag scans of live games. When the extension or app detects a live-game page, we record your account id (if signed in), install id, the site, the game URL or id, the time and the position. These records are kept for 12 months and may be shared with the platform concerned, including chess.com and lichess, and with their fair-play teams. We may withhold engine analysis of a flagged position until the game is over. See the privacy policy.

5. Accounts and keys

Keep your credentials and API keys secret. You are responsible for what happens under your account. We may suspend an account or key on credible evidence of breach of section 3, or for abuse.

6. API customers

  • Keep keys on servers you control.
  • Include the rule in section 3 in the terms for your own users, and respond to our fair-play enquiries within five business days.
  • Do not build tools that read a game in progress and overlay moves, evaluations or arrows on the play site.
  • Quotas and rate limits are described in the API docs and on the pricing page.

7. Plans, billing and refunds

Paid plans renew until cancelled and can be cancelled any time from the billing portal; access continues to the end of the paid period. Prices are shown on the pricing page. [Lawyer: refunds, taxes, auto-renewal notices by region.]

8. Your content

You keep your images and the positions we read from them. You give us permission to process them to provide the service. You must have the right to scan what you upload, including books and videos, and you are responsible for respecting copyright.

9. Acceptable use

Do not attack, overload or reverse-engineer the service, resell access without a licence, or evade quotas.

10. No warranty, limited liability

The service is provided as is. [Lawyer: warranty disclaimer, limitation of liability, indemnity.]

11. Changes and contact

We may change these terms and will say so on this page. Questions: hello@chessglance.com.
