DraftLast edited 6 October 2026
Draft. Needs lawyer review before launch. This text describes how the product is designed to work. It is not legal advice and is not yet binding. Jurisdiction, data-protection roles (GDPR, UK GDPR, India DPDP), retention periods, and the live-game logging described below all need a qualified lawyer's sign-off.

The short version

  • Free scans run on your device. The image is not uploaded.
  • If you use the API, PDF books or video to trainer, the file is sent to our server, read, and deleted when the request finishes.
  • Scans of live games are logged and may be shared with the platform. Details under Fair play.
  • We do not sell personal data and do not run third-party advertising.

The recognizer is a small model that runs in your browser, extension or app. For scans on your device the image is never sent to us. When a feature runs on our servers (the API, PDF books, video to trainer), the file is processed in memory and on temporary disk, and deleted when the request or job completes. We keep a log line with the request id, status, number of boards, duration and size. We do not keep the image or use it to train models.

Fair play: live-game scans are logged

Recognition works on any page, but using any tool to assist in a live game breaks the rules of chess.com and lichess, and our terms forbid it. To help platforms enforce their rules:

  • The browser extension detects live-game pages (for example live or daily game pages on chess.com, lichess games in progress, or a running game clock on the page).
  • On those pages a scan still returns the position, and we record a fair-play event: your account id (if signed in), install id, the site, the game URL or id, the time, and the position (FEN).
  • Events are kept for 12 months and may be shared with the platform concerned, so their fair-play teams can act on them.
  • You will see a notice when a scan is flagged. The install screen and these documents state the same.
  • Engine analysis of a flagged position is withheld until the game is over.

If you do not want this, do not scan live games.

Sharing

We share data with: our hosting and database providers, the payment processor, and, for fair-play events, the platform concerned. We may disclose data when the law requires it. We do not sell personal data.

Retention

Account data lasts while your account exists. Scan history can be deleted from your account. Fair-play events are kept for 12 months. Billing records are kept as tax law requires.

Your rights

You can ask us to access, correct, export or delete your data, and to stop processing it, by writing to hello@chessglance.com. Rights depend on where you live. [Lawyer: confirm the legal basis for fair-play logging and the controller and processor roles.]
